Hello, and welcome to episode four of the Visionaries Pursuit Podcast. I am delighted to be with all of you today. In the last episode, we're exploring how by paying attention to our beliefs, we can create a powerful and attractive state to be able to sell our vision. In this episode, what I want to do is go step by step in the process of how we change our beliefs.
How do we change a belief system? Thank you But first, let's talk a little bit about what is the difference between a thought and a belief. A thought is something that shows up in our mind. We have thousands of them every day, their perspectives, ideas, judgments, and they come and go, and they don't have a lot of emotion attached to them.
For example. Oh, I have an idea for a new podcast. Or what if we reach out to this person and try to pitch them our project? And then someone says, yeah, you know, I don't think for this reason. And easily you can let go of that. That's an idea. That's a thought. A belief system are also thoughts, but our thoughts that we've practiced over and over, that now they do have a lot of emotion attached to it.
They feel like the truth. They feel like a fact and they are not easily changed. A belief is a thought that feels absolutely true in our body. And it feels so true that most of us don't even question our beliefs. We just operate from them. A belief is a piece of code within the software that is your brain.
And the program runs and we don't even think about it. And those are our behaviors. Those are the results. Those are the relationships we have. They all stem from the beliefs we have about the world, about ourselves, about other people. A lot of the times when someone challenges our beliefs, We get defensive, there is something in us that wants to stay with the belief we have.
And changing a belief is a process, it might not happen all at once. There are all kinds of beliefs, positive ones, neutral, negative ones. And the way we analyze if a belief is a positive one or not, is by paying attention to the impact that belief is having in our life. Are this set of beliefs driving me towards the person I want to become, towards my goals, enjoying my life right now?
We know their positive beliefs. If they're interfering with any of those things, we know those are beliefs. We need to pay attention, and we want to change them. Today, I wanna explore beliefs that we have when we're leaders or entrepreneurs or visionaries that seem good, that seem obvious, that seem factual.
A thought is a brick, a belief is a wall made up of multiple thoughts that you've practiced over and over and over again, and that's what makes the wall so strong. So now I want to take you through the journey of changing a belief. And the belief I want us all to work through together is the belief that we have to work hard in order to achieve what we want.
And I'm sure by now, many of you are saying like, what do you mean? Of course we have to work hard because it is a very common belief in our society. And like I said, we don't question it. We take it for granted, but it actually is simply a thought. It's simply a belief. Okay, so here are the steps. Number one, awareness.
Number two, evaluation. Number three, coaching. Number four, learning. By the way, don't worry about taking notes because I created an amazing guide that will walk you through all these steps and that you're going to be able to use by yourself to change a belief or two. And it's linked in the description of the podcast.
You'll go there, it will take you to a landing page, name and email, and we'll email you the guide. Okay. Number one is to become aware that you have that belief and to become aware that that belief is not a fact. So, for example, it's not a fact that you have to work hard in order to be successful or in order to achieve what you want.
By the way, if your brain is telling you like, wait, what? This is not, where are you taking us? Don't worry. It's normal part of the process. We're going to get to the other side. So, number one, you became aware that working hard to be successful is just a thought. Number two, we evaluate it. So it's important to spend some time with the belief, understanding the impact disbelief has in your overall life.
So you're going to ask yourself, how do I feel when I think that I have to work hard in order to achieve success? Well, I feel motivated. I feel energized. I really like it. It wakes me up in the morning. Thank you. And how else? Well, sometimes I feel overwhelmed, I feel tired, I feel stressed, I feel like I cannot stop.
Then you're going to ask yourself, what is it that I do? Oh, I run from one thing to another. I have the Slack open, the WhatsApp open, the chat open, the email open. Everyone is calling for my attention. I'm running from one thing to the next. When I believe I have to work hard, I find things that make it hard to work.
That's what I do. I can also say, well, I do a lot of things, that I achieve a lot of things in a day. So there could also be some good things coming out of this belief system. Then you ask, how is this belief affecting my relationships? Well, because I'm always thinking that I have to work very hard, I never make space to take vacation.
Or when I'm with my family or my friends, I'm thinking about work. I'm waking up in the middle of the night with all the things that I still have to do. I don't feel like I ever fully relax. You can ask yourself, what are the byproducts, what are the byproducts of believing this? Well, my relationship with my spouse is not very good.
I don't see my friends anymore. I'm not making space for parts of my life that give me a lot of joy. hanging out with my friends or playing a certain sport that I really love. So in step number two, what you're doing is fully evaluating the impact this belief system has in your overall life, the good things and the bad things.
Why? Because you want to become more conscious of the code that's running the program in your head and, and all the things that it's impacting. Step number three, I call it coaching. And it's using different coaching tools. To chip away at that wall that the belief system is. One of them is questioning the belief.
Do you really, when you work hard, you achieve the best results? Or have you achieved incredible things when you're not working that hard? And usually my clients say, yes. Actually, the other day I was playing in the playground with my kids and I had this idea. I wrote it down and it brought us this amount of revenue that was incredible.
Or you know what? I made those two calls that changed everything moving forward. Oh, but those two calls, that one idea, that wasn't working hard. So working hard is not the only way to achieve success. We also look at the world and we start looking for evidence of the contrary. Can we find people that work, that haven't worked that hard, that haven't burned out, but have achieved success, that have a really balanced life?
Yes. Can we find people who actually work very, very hard, harder than us? and don't achieve the level of success we have, yes. So, with this questioning and finding evidence of the contrary, we start chipping away. Our brain starts going like, oh, hold on. Maybe this wasn't a fact. Maybe this was just a thought.
Another tool we use here is taking opposite action. So start saying, okay, what if this week you're going to achieve the same results, but you're going to work 50 percent of the time? What would that look like? And it's incredible when I give my clients challenges like this, their brain comes up with incredible ideas.
They hire people to delegate to. They immediately look at their to do list and they're like all these things I actually don't have to do them. We talk about essentialism. What is the essential thing you need to do that it's going to create a leap forward? So then you start practicing choosing three essential things to do in a day and you become very good knowing what are the things you need to touch or do in order to have biggest results.
Another tool we use in this step is creating better beliefs. Consciously choosing a new belief that helps us live more in line with the life we want. So instead of thinking I have to work hard in order to achieve success, we start thinking, I I need to be smart in the way I work. I need to have the best people so I can delegate.
I need to understand what is my zone of genius and spend most time there. And step number four is about learning. It's learning about our old belief system. So what happens with my clients is they start taking some action. They start finding evidence of the country and all of a sudden they hit a wall.
They say, you know what? I did create this space to rest. But I find myself putting things into it because I feel so restless. I don't know what to do when there's empty space. So then, again, we explore what is the belief there. What are the feelings? What is the impact of that? And we get more tools from coaching to address those specific circumstances.
And the other learning we do here is about our new belief system. What are the challenges, what are the ideas that come up when we start living from the belief that I can focus on the essential, that there's always two or three things that are going to add the most value. Because when we learn, then we can start the process again, becoming aware of the thought, becoming aware of the impact, challenging, choosing if we want to keep it or not.
This process of changing our beliefs is not linear. We can take three steps forward, one back. We can get stuck in one of the parts of the belief system for a little bit. But if we keep going and doing it consciously, having conversations, analyzing the impact, challenging those beliefs, there will be a moment that the whole wall will fall down and we'll start seeing the world through different lenses.
Thinking that we have to work hard will no longer be part of what we do. not part of our life. We are operating under a different code. Byron Katie, the author of Loving What Is. It says something that I think it's so beautiful to understand what it means to change a belief. And it's not that we actually change the belief, we push it away or we get rid of it, or we release the belief.
It's that there's a point where the belief releases us. So there you go. Those are the four steps to change a belief system. Now, like many of the things that I will share in this podcast, it's simple, four steps, some tools, but it doesn't mean it's easy. for listening. Changing a belief system requires persistence, repetition, compassion with yourself, patience.
But if you keep going at it, you will eventually move into a new paradigm where your life is more aligned with the life you want to have. I created this worksheet so you can try it at home. Like I said, you can absolutely go through this process by yourself. I created a guide to help you, but it really makes a difference when you're working with a partner or a therapist or a coach because they're outside of your belief system and they can question you, challenge you, offer evidence of the opposite.
more easily because they are outside. That's all for today. Don't forget to click the link in the description for your free guide. Go change some beliefs. If you have questions, email me. I'll be happy to engage with you and support you in this journey
